After the fall of the Roman Empire, Petra came under Byzantine rule. The city declined in importance during this period, but some new structures were built, including churches and monasteries. Petra also became an important center of Christian pilgrimage, as it was believed to be the site of the tomb of Aaron, the borther of moses.
